Festivals & Traditions: Carnival Parade | Hartford, Connecticut | All photos ©Karen O'Maxfield

The annual celebration of West Indian culture in Hartford began in 1962 when the islands of Jamaica and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago became independent nations in the Caribbean.

Over the years, the event has grown to a week-long series of activities, culminating in the Carnival Parade. Fraternal, business and social organizations, individuals and groups representing Connecticut and beyond participate in the festive display of floats, music, marching bands and colorful costumes. It is a feast for the eyes and an uplifting experience for all.
